Scuba Diving on Lanzarote
Everything the diver’s heart desires. Wrecks, caves, lava reefs and shell sand are home to a variety of species on Lanzarote. The main reason for this is that there are many protected areas around the island and fishing is restricted. Many of the dive sites are accessible from land. But those who prefer to dive off the boat will also find what they are looking for.
A special highlight can be admired since February 2016. The artist Jason de Caires Taylor designed over 300 human statues sunk off Lanzarote. The Museo Atlantico* serves on over 400m² as an artificial reef. With a maximum water depth of 14m they are absolutely suitable for beginners. The work of art is supposed to remind of refugees.
Most of the dive centres are located in Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise. But there are also dives in the north and even on La Graciosa. In all mentioned places there are beautiful house reefs and who wants variety must drive anyway.
While in the south of Lanzarote there are rather sandy dive sites, in the north there are mainly rocky landscapes. Also in the south there are lava reefs, but less than in the north. But that doesn’t matter at all, because this way you can explore the different ecosystems. This gives you an impression of what you like better. More than 30 dive sites offer plenty of variety for a diving holiday or even several.
From the south of Lanzarote you can also make trips to Los Lobos and in the north to La Graciosa. This results in even more diving possibilities and more variety.
On Lanzarote there is a large selection of diving centres. Some are more focused on introductory diving and training, others prefer diving trips with trained divers. Of course they offer all training from different and recognized organizations. A small overview can be found here.
The dive centre of Northdiving Lanzarote is located in Arrieta. It lives up to its name because it is the northernmost diving centre on the island. Arrieta is a tranquil village, away from mass tourism. The training takes place with PADI* up to Divemaster and according to IANTD* up to Instructor. So it is one of the few dive centres that offer technical diving! This is also worthwhile, because there are so some dive sites, at which it goes fast into the depth.
The equipment consists of high-quality brands such as Scubapro, Apeks and Diverite.
Dives in the south and on La Graciosa are also arranged.
If you don’t feel like going to bed castles and overcrowded dive sites, this is the place to be.
Aquatis Diving Center
The Aquatis Diving Center is located in Costa Teguise, just north of the island capital Arrecife. Costa Teguise is a tourist resort with large hotels and apartment complexes. A sheltered bay on the beach provides the ideal conditions for dive training. Training is conducted according to PADI and IAC* standards.
In the offer are both land, and boat dives. Since Costa Teguise is pretty much centrally located on the island, one has short travel times to the north and south.
Dive Guide Lanzarote
The Island Government provides a free dive guide as a PDF* on its website. It includes 30 dive sites with map and further information. Thus one finds notes to the general conditions, types, entrance possibilities and depth of the Spots.
