Dive Site El Desierto – The Desert

Two Trumpetfish crossing their way.

Although the name suggests that nothing can be seen here, this is not the case at all. El Desierto is located on the western edge of El Hierro Marine Reserve. From this point on, all the way to Faro de Orchilla, there is sand and its inhabitants. This also includes the Brown Garden Eel, of which I have not seen a larger colony than at this spot. You also have a good chance to meet different types of rays.

Apart from the sand, there are of course lava reefs, where a colourful life of the typical Atlantic small fish takes place. The search for moray eels, crustaceans and other species is worthwhile. Also a view into the blue should take place from time to time, because here mostly a swarm of White Trevally can be seen. Besides, it may well be that other large fish swim by.

In the shallow area there is a canyon with a window at the end of the dive. The small detour can be used ideally to make the safety stop.
